Christina Grimmie, a former contestant of The Voice, was shot and killed following a concert in Orlando, Florida on Friday night, according to ABC News. She was 22 years old.
According to Orlando police spokesman Wanda Miglio, Grimme was signing autographs for fans when the male suspect walked up to her and began shooting. Gimmie’s brother “immediately tackled the suspect, stopping him from causing any more harm to Christina and her fans,” Miglio explained. “During the struggle, the suspect shot himself. The suspect was pronounced dead at the scene.”
“Her brother is a hero for saving and stopping him from not hurting anyone else,” Miglio added.
Orlando police chief John Mina said the suspect didn’t appear to know Grimmie personally and may have been a deranged fan, although a motive is still unknown.
Grimmie first gained notoriety from covers of songs she posted to YouTube. In 2014, she appeared as a contestant on NBC singing show The Voice, ultimately finishing in third place.
