It’s been three years since Derek Cianfrance dropped his last feature — the highly underrated The Place Beyond the Pines — but the Colorado filmmaker returns this Labor Day with The Light Between Oceans.
Starring Michael Fassbender and Alicia Vikander, the adaptation of M.L. Stedman’s acclaimed period novel of the same name follows a couple in charge of a lighthouse on the West Australian coast post-World War I. Their life shakes up some when they come across a baby drifting at sea, whose mother (Rachel Weisz) may still be alive.
Cianfrance is working with fire on this one. In addition to the aforementioned stellar cast, he has composer Alexandre Desplat on hand in addition to Australian cinematographer Adam Arkapaw (True Detective). The results show.
