As a first timer going to South by Southwest, I’ve been seeking advice from everyone I know. In addition to the usual “comfy shoes,” “stay hydrated,” and “plan to have your plan go to heck” tidbits, everyone I’ve talked to has emphasized the importance of having an external charger handy. But what happens if you forget it at the hotel, or if you just don’t have one to begin with? Well, Mophie has stepped in with a rather adorable solution: St. Bernards.
The electronics company famous for its battery chargers will be at SXSW with a pack of the equally famous rescue dogs. On your phone’s last gasp, all you’ll have to do is tweet your current location and a screen shot of your phone’s battery life to @Mophie, and the company will dispatch a fluffy friend to come bring you a charge. You can even track the dog with the Glympse app if you’ve got the juice to spare.
The dogs will be accompanied by human handlers to make sure everyone’s safe, which of course begs the question of whether the dogs themselves are really a necessary component to the whole thing. Part of the answer is that the dogs come from the St. Bernard Rescue Foundation, with whom Mophie has teamed to try to get the animals adopted after the festival.
“We’re thrilled to partner with Mophie to help raise awareness and hopefully find safe and loving homes for these dogs,” SBRF’s marketing manger Olive Ashwell said in a press release from the company. “There’s a shared sense of passion between both our organizations as this amazing partnership launches at SXSW.”
If nothing else, it’s a better (read: less offensive) ploy than hiring homeless people as Wi-Fi hotspots.
