When you think of the stoic and academically-minded individuals that moderate political debates, who comes to mind? For me, it’s somehow always Charles Grodin circa 1992’s Beethoven.

The kind of person that probably doesn’t come to mind is Fucked Up frontman Damian Abraham. Smart? Surely, but he’s also a bearded, slightly overweight stoner with an unchecked obsession for vinyl and pro wrestling and whose self-inflicted forehead scars are nearly as bad as Abdullah the Butcher himself. I say this as huge fan and as a wrestling aficionado with a belly.

Yet, Abrahm is set to enter the political arena later this month as he’ll moderate a debate in the Toronto mayoral race (via Scheduled for September 29th in the Cinema One at the TIFF Bell Light Box, the debate is set to feature most of the current candidate: David Soknacki, Olivia Chow, John Tory, and Ari Goldkind. Also invited is the city’s current walking PR disaster mayor, Rob Ford, although there’s no confirmation if he can or even will attend. If he does, I say he and Abraham thrown down in a good old fashioned “Barbed Wire Rope, Exploding C4, and Time Bomb Death Match.”

Even if Abraham doesn’t seem like the most likely choice, he’s no slouch when it comes to policy. His Twitter account portrays him as fairly savvy and alert fella, and he’s shown interesting socio-political insights in past interviews. If nothing else, though, it just adds to the three-ring circus that has dominated Toronto politics in recent years: Ford is somehow still mayor despite smoking crack and generally acting like a lunatic. And when a porn star planned to run against him, the coverage extended beyond that of merely a hokey gimmick.

For more info on the debate, which is open to the public, head here. Can’t attend in person? It’ll be streaming from 12-2pm EDT on
