Chris Martin joins NBC’s The Voice as mentor

Because bringing Usher and Shakira back for another season wasn’t enough star power, NBC has called in the big guns for their hit singing competition show The Voice. Coldplay frontman Chris Martin will join the program for three episodes airing March 31st, April 1st, and April 7th.

Look, I don’t know how the show works either, but here’s what I gather: Shakira, Usher, Blake Shelton, and Adam Levine each mentor a team of singing hopefuls. Martin is stepping in as a special advisor for all four groups to help them out with the newly added Battles: Round 2 (goosebumps, right?). The dueling competitors will face each other by performing the same song. (USA Today reports this replaces the Knockout round, where performers sang different songs. What a twist!). Apparently, Martin has already recorded his appearances, during which he gave performers tips on how to work within their own strengths and adjust for their persona and voices.

Proving they’re hip to their key demographic, The Voice revealed Martin’s involvement with a surprise SnapChat posting. Coldplay went ahead and did it the old fashioned way via Twitter. The band’s new record, Ghost Stories, will arrive May 19th on Parlophone Records.
